Cierre del CLAEM XI
The XI Latin American Congress of Music Schools, CLAEM XI, held from May 22 to 26, 2023, at Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña National University (UNPHU), was successfully completed; the event was organized by the Latin American Association of Schools of Music (ALAEMUS), and the International School of Contemporary Music of the university.
The event officially started off on May 23 with master classes “A Glimpse into Native Dominican Music” by Federico Méndez, from the Dominican Republic; “Traditional Mexican Music” by Samuel Pina, from Mexico; “Colombian Music” by Nacho Nieto, from Colombia; and “Where’s the Taste?: Rhythmic Concepts from the Caribbean” by Rubén Amador from Puerto Rico. There were also rehearsals of music assemblies and, at the end of the afternoon, the Opening Concert of the Congress.
Continuing the event on Wednesday 24, the following keynote talks were given: “Simbeque Educative Project, folkloric review” by Miguel Manescau García, from Spain; “Song, vocal and auditive way” by Beatriz Alonso Exposito, Spanish; “Ecosystem of musical learning in the 21st century” by Daniel Ravelo, from Peru; “Jazz Improvisation” by Ale Demogli, from Argentina. The first part of the master class and the rehearsals of music assemblies, by Master Néstor Torres, from Puerto Rico, were of great impact.
Meanwhile, on Thursday 25th, the master classes “The music of northern Mexico” were held by Jorge Rocha, from Mexico; “A perspective on the music career” by Ray Seol, from Puerto Rico; “Auditory training” by Leopoldo Calderón, from Venezuela; “Brazilian music” by João Marcondes, from Brazil and the second part of the master class Néstor Torres and the music assemblies was held.
To close the event on Friday 26, the classes were presented “Colombian Andean Bambuco: traditional rhythms and adaptations” by John Alexander Moreno, from Venezuela; “Music from the coast of Peru” by Oscar Stagnaro and Álvaro Valido, Peruvians; “Modal composition” by David Hernán Sarmiento, from Colombia and “Ethnology of music from Hispaniola” by Toné Vicio, from the Dominican Republic. A conversation about the Latin Grammys was also offered, with Nannette Vélez, and to conclude a musical concert.
