Dr. Joaquín Balaguer, State of Democracy in the Region: Challenges to Electoral Integrity, UNPHU

Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña (UNPHU), and its Faculty of Legal and Political Sciences, held the Master’s Chair Dr. Joaquín Balaguer, Conference «State of Democracy in the Region: Challenges to Electoral Integrity», by Máximo Zaldívar, regional director for the Americas and the Caribbean at the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES).

During his presentation, the speaker explained the importance of the role of electoral bodies in the preservation of democratic order and threats to their dependencies. Likewise, indicated several points about the defense of the institutions responsible for electoral processes, such as the need to reinvent communication skills; they must be able to establish assertive and timely communication strategies, as well as push public deliberation beyond the mechanisms of direct democracy. 

Patricia Pérez, director of the Law School were present at the event; Jatzel Román, lawyer expert in international relations and deputy minister of foreign affairs, and Juan Ulloa, lawyer specializing in Electoral Law and Electoral Process.
