García Fermín emphasizes that the scholarships will enhance Dominican development by cultivating skilled talent within the country.

Santo Domingo, September 9, 2025.

The Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology (MESCyT) awarded a total of 208 national scholarships to meritorious students from Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña (UNPHU), in both undergraduate and graduate programs, as part of the government’s commitment to promote equitable access to higher education.

Of these scholarships, 180 are for degree programs in Architecture, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Civil Engineering, Agronomy, Pharmacy, Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Dentistry, and Contemporary Music, while the rest will be allocated for specialties and master’s degrees in various fields crucial for national development.

The handover ceremony was led by the Minister of MESCyT, Dr. Franklin García Fermín, accompanied by the Rector of UNPHU, architect Miguel Fiallo Calderón, and the Director of National Scholarships, Lanny Portorreal. During the event, students received their certifications in a ceremony full of emotion and dedication.

Today, as part of President Luis Abinader’s vision, we are awarding 208 new national scholarships that will enable these young people to pursue undergraduate and graduate programs in various fields of knowledge. This effort ensures equal opportunities and educational inclusion for all areas of the country,” said García Fermín.

The official recalled that the National Scholarship Program is a key element in the development of the Dominican State, coordinating and encouraging the training of highly qualified professionals who can meet the demands of the labor market and address the social, economic, and technological challenges of the country.

Meanwhile, the UNPHU’s rector, Miguel Fiallo Calderón, welcomed the initiative, noting that awarding these scholarships strengthens the university’s leadership in training top-quality human resources. “Investment in youth is the best guarantee to raise the quality of higher education and build a more competitive future for the Dominican Republic,” he emphasized.

Through this initiative, the State ensures that each scholar’s individual efforts contribute to a collective benefit, guiding talents toward fields that require creativity, dedication, and a desire to serve.

Faithful to the vision of its founders and the values that have supported it for over fifty years, the institution enthusiastically celebrates this new partnership with the MESCyT, emphasizing that higher education needs the support of the government, society, and every family that believes in the transformative power of knowledge.

The event was attended by academic and administrative authorities of UNPHU, along with family members of the beneficiaries, who celebrated the opportunity that this support provides for the development of Dominican youth.

With this handover, the MESCyT reaffirms its dedication to expanding educational opportunities, aligning with the Government’s strategy of democratizing access to knowledge and reinforcing higher education as a key pillar of national development.
