The University recognizes Gladys Antonia De Jesús Méndez

Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña and its Department of Management of Institutional Experience and Graduate Management, recognized Gladys Antonia De Jesús Méndez, in the second edition 2022- 2023. This recognition is the highest award that a graduate can obtain, after excelling in the different areas of public and private life, and which enjoys professional prestige.

The graduate was selected for her outstanding educational and research work. She is the first Dominican woman to receive a PhD in Economics from an international university. Her professional career has been in the classroom, teaching in her area of knowledge, which in combination with her research work have made her worthy of various awards and honors from national and international academic institutions. She graduated with the highest honors of her class in 1971, at the university.

The award was given by the rector of the university, Architect Miguel Fiallo Calderón, accompanied by the Director of Institutional Experience and Graduate Management, Laura Veloz. The act of recognition took place in February 2023, in the rectory of the university.

About Divina Altagracia García Vásquez

Graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Economics at UNPHU, she holds a Master’s and PhD in Economics from Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, United States. She taught at Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña; Ohio University in Athens, Ohio; East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina; Pontificia Universicad Católica Madre y Maestra; Inter-American University of Puerto Rico, Recinto Arecibo and Chowan University in North Carolina. 

Between 1986 and 1989, she worked in the public administration of the Dominican Republic as director of the Industrial Free Zones, and as deputy director of the Dominican Export Center (CEDOPEX). She has been a member of the American Economic Association, the Murfreesboro Rotary Club 6112 District 7720 and other professional organizations. She is currently Director of the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies at Chowan University.

She is the author of several articles in academic publications of her specialization.
