The UNPHU Panel on Women Who Made History in Psychology

Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña (UNPHU), through its Faculty of Humanities and Education and its School of Psychology, dictated the panel Women Who Made History in Psychology, on the commemoration of International Women’s Day.  In the activity, a dramatization of four women of Psychology who made great contributions to science and life, through scenes personified by students of Clinical and School Psychology was performed. Among them were Mary Whiton Calkins, Mary Ainsworth, Anna Freud and Virginia Satir, each from a different field, in research, teaching, child labor and family therapy.

The panel discussed the life of each of the four women who made history in Psychology, how was their life, their childhood, what led them to study Psychology and why, what were the different types of contributions, as well as challenges in a field where the important contributions of female psychologists were overwhelmingly overlooked, and only highlighted male psychologists.

Significant contributions to the development of Psychology as a Neuroscience and to society were also emphasized.

The activity aimed to highlight how women have had to face inequalities from remote times to the present, specifically in psychology as a profession.

The welcome words were given by Ivonne Guzman, director of the School of Psychology, and the participation of the students, Noelys Santana, Taylor Rodríguez, Lorendy Lorenzo and Camille Díaz, from the career of Clinical Psychology and School Psychology. The student Samuel Paredes served as moderator. At the end of the activity there was a question-and-answer section.

The activity took place in the lecture hall of the university, in building 3 first floor.
