To strengthen the pension and social security system in the Dominican Republic, the Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña (UNPHU), Administradora de Fondos de Pensiones AFP Reservas, and the Superintendency of Pensions (Sipen) launched the Diploma Regulation, Investments, Workers, and Savings (RITA), which aims to foster a comprehensive and critical understanding of the Dominican pension system.
The program, presented during an event at UNPHU headquarters, will train AFP Reservas professionals on key topics such as the system’s rules, regulatory mechanisms, structural challenges, and best practices that influence pension system management.
The training will offer specialized, current, and practical instruction to enhance the technical, regulatory, and operational skills of participants. It is part of ongoing education initiatives aimed at encouraging continuous professional development related to the social security and pension system.
Executive Vice President of AFP Reservas, Henry Fuentes, described RITA’s presentation as a turning point in how training is approached, offering a clear response to the need to professionalize, update, and deepen our understanding of the pension system—especially at a time when the country requires more than ever technical, informed, and responsible decision-making.
“This initiative is a vital part of our mission: to support our affiliates with quality service, and also to actively participate in creating a sustainable, transparent, and efficient system,” he said.
Meanwhile, UNPHU Rector Miguel Fiallo Calderón stated that “This program, which begins today, represents a significant step in strengthening professional skills in a sector so vital for the economic and social development of the Dominican Republic.”
In the closing speech of the activity, AFP Reservas Commercial Vice President Jorge Dargam stated that this diploma offers an invaluable opportunity for all professionals who have a direct or indirect impact on the system, providing them with current and practical tools to understand its structure, operation, and the challenges facing the country.
He argued that, since its founding, the entity has believed in the power of education as a driver of development. “We are committed to knowledge, lifelong learning, and strengthening technical capacities that enable us to provide better service to our members while contributing to the system’s sustainability.”
This plan aims to provide the conceptual and practical tools necessary to analyze, understand, and act effectively in this field. It consists of five modules that cover the background and regulatory framework of the Dominican Pension System, benefits of the Dominican Pension System, investment management and supervision, operating processes of the AFP, and savings: financial planning for the future.
