UNPHU and REFIDOMSA sign agreement

Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña (UNPHU), and the Dominican Refinery of Petroleum S.A (REFIDOMSA), signed a collaboration agreement with a term of 5 years. Both entities have technical and scientific fields of common interest.

The objective of this agreement is to establish a framework for collaboration in research, innovation and development of projects in the exploration and marketing of hydrocarbons, among other related projects present and future; through the support, participation and exchange of experts and researchers, publications, dissemination programs and transfer of scientific knowledge. It also includes strengthening the relationship of cooperation in their respective fields of mastery and experience, at the academic, scientific, cultural and social levels. 

The collaboration between the two entities will be based on the development of studies and research projects on topics of common interest; publications for the promotion of the results of joint projects in national and international journals and indexed media; dissemination of knowledge through the organization of conferences, meetings, courses, workshops, etc.; mutual support in activities of association with the university; exchange of information and experiences in the subject matter of this agreement; facilitate field practices, use of laboratory facilities and equipment in the framework of joint projects, under the full observance and compliance with the Procedures and Policies of Health, Safety and Environments dictated by REFIDOMSA.  

The signing of the framework agreement took place in the university’s Rectory on July 5, 2022, between architect Miguel Fiallo Calderón, Rector at UNPHU and Mr. Leonardo Aguilera Batista, President of the Board of Directors of REFIDOMSA.

During the signing were present by UNPHU, Josefina Pepín Ubrí, vice-rector of Research Projects, Linking and Internationalization and Claudia Acra Despradel, director of Research. By REFIDOMSA, Eng. Gregorio Rosario, Sub-Coordinator of Geoinformation Research and Development Unit, Ms. Yamily Lopez, General Manager  of REFIDOMSA; Dr. Leonardo Aguilera, Chairman of the Board of Directors, and Mr. Ramón Emilio Cruz, Coordinator of the Research and Development Unit.

About REFIDOMSA

The Dominican State and Shell International Petroleum Company, LTD, signed on November 7, 1969 the Refinery Agreement, with a 50% share each, for the refining of crude oil and its derivatives, approved by the National Congress by Resolution 533 of December 31, 1969, with a capital investment of USD$39.5 MM. Initial refining capacity was 30,000 barrels/day; and total storage capacity was 1.09 MM barrels.

It is the country’s leader in the fuel industry, the production and import of finished products, derived from petroleum. It supplies the demand of the domestic market, some are obtained from the process of refining oil in the plant; the others are imported from other producing countries.
