UNPHU Announces Event on Dominican-Haitian Relations

Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña (UNPHU) announced for next Tuesday, November 22, a seminar on the “Present and future of relations with Haiti: The challenges of good neighborliness.”

In making the announcement, the rector of UNPHU, architect Miguel Fiallo Calderón, said that the purpose of the same is to contribute ideas and raise awareness about the need for a good relationship between the two countries that share the same island and the same border.

The activity aspires to analyze in all its depth Dominican-Haitian relations, with emphasis on the following topics: The internal Haitian crisis and its impact on the country and the subregional level; the current and future challenges of immigration and Haitian social and political instability; economic consequences of massive illegal immigration on employment and the social security system; illegal immigration and urban marginalization. All these issues have been the subject of the widest attention of Dominican society, rector Fiallo Calderón explained.

The rector announced that the event has been invited as exhibitors, Dr. Roberto Álvarez, Minister of Foreign Affairs; historians Frank Moya Pons, Roberto Cassá, Miguel Reyes Sánchez and Miguel Guerrero, as well as sociologists Fernando Ferrán and Wilfredo Lozano; and political leader Pelegrín Castillo.

The organization of the event is part of the activities of the UNPHU Forum for Social Studies, aimed at analyzing the fundamental issues of Dominican society.

The one-day event will take place from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday 22, in the Max Henríquez Ureña hall of this education institution.
