Universidad Nacional Pedro Henriquez Ureña (UNPHU), through the faculty of Health Sciences, held the ceremony of the white gown with the participation of 198 students. This ceremony symbolizes the termination of the cycle of study of basic sciences and the beginning of clinical and surgical practices, entailing direct contact with patients.
The purpose of this ceremony is the beginning of the period of hospital shifts and the commitment to perform the medical profession with respect, honesty, and confidence.
The white gown started at the Pritzker School of Medicine at Chicago University in 1989. Still, the first white gown ceremony was held at the School of Doctors and Surgeons at Columbia University in 1993. Dr. Arnold P. Gold, professor, and pediatric neurologist, led the event.
Dr. William Duke, dean of the Faculty of Health Science, offered the welcome. Gown delivery was under the faculty’s dean and coordinator of the clinical cycle.
The honor table was integrated by Doctors William Duke, Jehison Corporan, academic coordinator, Cindy Rodriguez, coordinator of the Clinical Cycle, and Osvaldo Moreno, coordinator of the hospital shifts. Honor guests were Doctor Jaime Jorge Manzur, Mario de Jesus Valdez, Hector Ramirez, Adrian De Oleo, dean of Student Wellbeing, and Priscilla Santos, representative of the Clinical Cycle of the Council Board of the School of Medicine.
