Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña (UNPHU) will expand its academic offerings starting in September with the launch of its Doctorate in Basic Sciences, specializing in Physics and Chemistry. This postgraduate program marks a historic milestone in the country’s higher education, becoming the first doctorate in Basic Sciences offered in the Dominican Republic, as well as the first doctorate created by UNPHU itself.
During a visit to the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology (MESCyT), UNPHU’s rector, architect Miguel Fiallo Calderón, had the chance to speak with Minister Franklin García Fermín, who emphasized the importance of this PhD as it addresses the increasing need for highly trained human capital in these key areas crucial for the country’s development.
Likewise, Minister García Fermín expressed his support for the country’s higher education institutions as a guarantor of system stability and a means to develop highly skilled professionals with a clear vision.
He stated that the country has earned respect from the international scientific community due to the public policies implemented by President Luis Abinader’s government.
García Fermín indicated that programs will be strengthened in 2025 so that the Dominican Republic remains a leading destination for academics.
Meanwhile, UNPHU’s rector, architect Miguel Fiallo Calderón, stated that the university is committed to scientific research, knowledge development, and advanced academic training, playing a vital role in strengthening science and technology in the country.
Curriculum Description
The Doctorate in Basic Sciences at Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña (UNPHU), with specializations in Physics and Chemistry, is a program aligned with the objectives outlined in the Strategic Plan of Science, Technology, and Innovation (PECYT). It aims to address the country’s educational challenges and foster a culture of scientific and technological research that enhances global competitiveness.
The core component of the program is research, which enables PhDs to apply the knowledge gained to solve problems related to chemical and physical processes within a context of technological innovation.
This PhD program not only offers solid scientific training but also equips graduates with the essential tools to become research leaders, capable of making significant contributions to solving practical problems in scientific, industrial, and technological fields.
