About the White Gown

The White Gown originated at the University of Chicago’s Pritzker School of Medicine in 1989; but the first full White Gown ceremony took place at Columbia University’s School of Physicians and Surgeons in 1993. Dr. Arnold P. Gold, a professor and pediatric neurologist, oversaw the surgery.

It symbolizes the culmination of the cycle of study of the basic sciences and the beginning of clinical practices, which carry implicit direct contact with the patient and seeks the student to commit to Medicine.
